The deadline for government’s Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP) has been moved to February 7, 2023, after it expires today, January 31, 2023.

This follows an agreement reached with the Ghana Association of Banks (GAB), Ghana Insurers Association (GIA), and the Ghana Securities Industry Association (GSIA).

According to Government, a revised and final Exchange Memorandum will be issued by February 2, 2023.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Finance said :“These developments have necessitated the final extension of the deadline from 31st January 2023, to Tuesday 7th February 2023, and a new settlement date of Tuesday 14th February 2023 that will be confirmed via the new Exchange Memorandum.”

Based on the engagement with the representatives groups of individual bondholders, the following has been offered and will form part of the new exchange memorandum:

. An affirmation that all individual bondholders are free not to participate;

. However, upon a successful DDEP there will be very few of the ‘old bonds’ in circulation, and likely limit its tradability;

. In this regard, the Government is pleased to make available the following alternative offer to encourage all individual bondholders to participate in the Exchange:

. All individual bondholders who are below the age of 59 years will be offered instruments with a maximum maturity of 5 years, instead of 15 years, and a 10% coupon rate;

. All retirees (including those retiring in 2023) will be offered instruments with a maximum maturity of 5 years, instead of 15 years, and a 15% coupon rate.

Additionally, discussions are being finalised with Organized Labour and Pension Fund Trustees, on a separate arrangement in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding signed with Organized Labour on 22nd December 2022, and in line with government’s debt management Programme.

The Government appreciates the cordial engagements with the various stakeholders since the beginning of the DDEP, that have made such remarkable progress possible.

School Placement: ‘We’re working with relevant institutions to stop future anomalies’ – PRO

School Placement: ‘We’re working with relevant institutions to stop future anomalies’ – PRO The Public Relations Officer for the Ministry of Education, Kwesi Kwarteng, says the service is working with relevant institutions to stop future anomalies in the school placement system.

This statement is in line with an investigative documentary “School Placement for Sale” by The Fourth Estate which captures parents, guardians, and officials in charge of school placement, making deals to put wards in desired institutions.

The Fourth Estate established that The Minister of Education and the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) were the only ones given access and passwords to approve protocol placement into Category A senior high schools.

This was to curb fraud, but The Fourth Estate found evidence that placement into Category A schools happened through a network of intermediaries that included cleaners and security guards.

Meanwhile, eight suspects have been arrested for their roles in the school placement for sale documentary. They are Eric Aggrey, 36, cleaner; Rachel Aryeetey, a caterer; Isaac Mensah, and Gilbert Afriyie Nkrumah, 23.

The rest are Sebastian Appram, a staff of the Fisheries Commission’s Tema Regional Office; Bernard Kusi Agyemang, an operations manager with a logistics company; Eugenia Abigail Ahiable, an administrator; and Daniel Opoku, a foreman.

Reacting to the documentary on Atinka FM’s AM Drive with host Kaakyire Ofori Ayim, Kwesi Kwarteng, said the Ministry of Education is putting measures in place to curb the demand on some particular schools.

“We are introducing measures to give access to a lot of people to get opportunities to school in their preferred choices. We are trying to curb the demand on particular schools.

“It has more to do with demand and supply; at the same time we are working with the relevant institutions to stop future anomalies in the school placement system,” Kwesi Kwarteng added.

I wouldn’t allow Asiedu Nketiah to turn me into an idiot – Koku Anyidoho

I wouldn’t allow Asiedu Nketiah to turn me into an idiot – Koku Anyidoho I was brought up in a good home, attended a good school and I am my own man who would not allow myself to be corrupted,” former deputy General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Koku Anyidoho explains falling out with Asiedu Nketiah.

According to him, Asiedu Nketiah at the time wanted him to malign President Akufo-Addo and now Executive Director, Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah and his refusal to do so led to him (Asiedu Nketiah) coming after him (Koku Anyidoho).

Koku Anyidoho was arrested in March 2018 and held by the BNI after a press conference organized by the Inter-Party Coalition for National Sovereignty at the International Press Centre in Accra.

He is alleged to have made remarks that there would be a social revolution during the tenure of President Nana Akufo-Addo.

After he was released, Koku Anyidoho claims Asiedu Nketiah urged him to embark on a media tour to malign the President and CID boss at the time, Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah for maltreating him in custody when he was treated with all respect.

“I was the assistant of Asiedu Nketiah at the time and he asked me to insult the President and Maame Yaa Tiwaa Addo-Danquah after I was released from BNI cells and I refused. That is how Asiedu Nketiah and I fell out.

“We fell out because I wasn’t going to lie about how I was treated whilst in BNI cells. I was treated with respect and I wasn’t going to lie about that because I don’t do anyone’s bidding.

“I wasn’t going to allow politics turn me into an idiot or a slave to another,” he submitted in an interview with Happy 98.9 FM’s Don Kwabena Prah on the ‘Epa Hoa Daben’ political talk show.

The politician revealed Asiedu Nketiah also got some party faithful to spread rumors he (Koku Anyidoho) had taken money from President Akufo-Addo, hence his refusal to take them on for treating him badly when he was locked up in a BNI cell.

He described Asiedu Nketiah as a petty and wicked leader who has no good intentions for the NDC.

Minority reshuffle orchestrated by Bagbin – Yaw Obeng Manu

Minority reshuffle orchestrated by Bagbin – Yaw Obeng Manu Editor of the Ghanaian Publisher Newspaper, Yaw Obeng Manu, has alleged that the recent change in leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament was influenced by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin.

He persisted that Bagbin’s affiliations to the opposition NDC cannot go unnoticed with issues relating to the party despite serving as an arbiter.
During the Editor’s Take discussion on the Happy Morning Show with Samuel Eshun, he alluded that the decision targeted Hon. Haruna Iddrisuand Muntaka Mubarak as leaders of the Minority Caucus as some sections within the party believe they were against Bagbin.

“The decision targeted specific people and obviously it wasn’t just Muntaka but probably Haruna appears to be the target. Before I go into it, we have heard the National Chairman of the party, now explaining that the previous leadership were not cooperating with the Speaker of Parliament, knowing very while the Speaker of Parliament is supposed to be an independent arbiter in the whole process,” he told Samuel Eshun.

“Aseidu Nketia is the National Chairman do the decision could not have been made without his input. He also acknowledged the fact that the party struggled to get Bagbin as the Speaker and so naturally the party is supposed to benefit.

“If Aseidu Nketia says the leadership were not cooperating with the speaker then I want to assume that Bagbin told them they weren’t working with him and in the scheme of things you cannot take Bagbin out of the NDC now.

“He matters in the NDC and if he tells them the leadership were working against him then they needed to do something. That was to get rid of them,” he added.

Yaw Obeng Manu further suggested that calls for the NDC leadership to have consulted key members of the party are unrealistic as the party’s decision-makers knew such attempts would prove futile.

On Tuesday, January 24, the NDC changed the makeup of its parliamentary leadership by designating Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, MP for Ajumako Enyam Essiam, as the new Minority Leader.

James Klutse Avedzi, MP for Ketu North, and Muntaka Mubarak, MP for Asawase were demoted from their roles as Minority leader, Deputy Minority leader, and Minority Chief Whip, respectively.

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, MP for Ajumako-Enyam-Essiam, Emmanuel Kofi Buah, MP for Ellembelle, and Kwame Agbodza, MP for Adaklu have taken their places as Minority leader, the Deputy Minority leader and Minority Chief Whip respectively.

I have asked Akufo-Addo to halt the cedi’s depreciation – Kwabena Agyapong

0

Presidential hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, says the Finance Minister, Ken Ofori Atta, should have left office seven months ago.

This comment by the presidential hopeful is in line with the current economic crisis and the issues surrounding Ghana’s controversial domestic debt exchange program.

In October 2022, the Majority Caucus in Parliament also asked for Ken Ofori Atta to be fired from his job as Finance Minister. The majority MPs made the announcement to the media in Parliament on Tuesday, October 25, 2022.

The signatures of the legislators of the NPP are backing the call on the president to sack his finance minister and his deputy.

Addressing the media on the issue, MP for Asante Akyem North, Andy Appiah-Kubi, said they have been compelled to go public with their demands because several appeals to the Presidency through the leadership have failed.

The 80 NPP MPs who addressed the media disclosed that their position is consistent with those of the colleagues who were not present at the time of the press engagement.

In an exclusive interview on Atinka, presidential hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwabena Agyei Agyapong, who reacted to the call for the removal of Ofori Atta from office, mentioned that although he has no personal issues with the finance minister, the economic health of Ghana is paramount.

He revealed that confidence is an unquantifiable product and that once the public loses trust in the economy, getting it back will be difficult.

“I have asked the president to do something to stop our currency from going down. Some serious decisions have to be taken. I completely disagree with the president on his position on the finance minister.

“I have said this before, and it does not mean that I have a personal issue against the finance minister. I think he should have left 7 months ago, in my personal view,” Kwabena Agyei Agyapong told Ama Gyenfa Ofosu Darkwa.
