The last person to call him on the phone was me- Teammate of Christian Atsu maintains optimism

Kevin Olivier Soni, Cameroon international and former Hatayspor teammate of Christian Atsu, has revealed his last interaction with the former Black Stars player before the earthquake struck on Monday 6 February.

The Indomitable Lions midfielder has revealed harrowing details of his escape from Hatay, the club’s home town and one of the areas worst hit by the natural disaster.

In a wide-ranging interview with French news outlet Foot Mercato, Soni spoke about the events before, during and after the disaster, including answering questions about Atsu.

Here is a transcript of what he said about Atsu

Foot Mercato: Some members of the club have not had your luck and are still missing, like Christian Atsu.

Kevin Soni: I get goose bumps talking to you. Before this happened, I was on the phone with Christian Atsu. He had scored a free-kick on Sunday and I told him that he had played well and that I liked his game.

I told him that I hoped to find the ground quickly so that we could play together. Little did I know that was the last time I’d ever speak to him. Two hours later I had no news. I was told that my friend might be dead, it’s enough to drive you crazy.

I am certainly the last person to have spoken to him on the phone. I’m not proud to say this, but I really hope we find him safe and sound. It is my wish. I pray for it every day.

Foot Mercato: Some media have said that he has been found. Do you have any news?

Kevin Soni: Those are lies. We flew back to Istanbul on Tuesday night and he was not with us. If he was found, why wasn’t he on the plane? These are lies.

They may have said that to keep up hope and not to frighten his family. What I can tell you is that he was not on the flight to Istanbul. I hope we will find him.

Atsu, Hatayspor official still missing

Christian Atsu and Hatayspor’s sporting director, Taner Savut, are among those still believed to be under the rubble.

Reports emerged that Atsu had been rescued alive and taken to hospital after 26 hours (7 February), but this was later dismissed as a case of mistaken identity.

According to Ghana’s ambassador to Turkey, Atsu is the only Ghanaian still unaccounted for.

Couple with four children in court over child stealing

A couple, with four children, were Monday arraigned at an Adentan Circuit Court for allegedly stealing an abandoned day-old baby boy.

Edward Nyarko -Affum and Naomi Nyarko- Affum who claimed they had “developed some special love” for the baby kept him until the Police and officials of the Department of Social Welfare caused their arrest.

Charged with conspiracy to commit crime and child stealing, the couple in the presence of their lawyer, have pleaded not guilty.

Answering questions from the judge, they informed the court that they had four children – their first child was 16 years old, and their last child was eight.

The court, presided over by Mrs Sedinam Awo Balokah, admitted the couple to bail in the sum of GHC 40,000 each with two sureties each.

The court said the sureties should be known to the Police and adjourned the matter to Monday, March 13 for mention.

Prosecuting, Chief inspector Maxwell Lanyo said the complainant was the Adentan Municipal Director of the Department of Social Welfare who lived at Madina.

The prosecution said Edward and Naomi were a married couple residing at New Legon, near Accra.

It said on January 6, 2023, at about 0550 hours, the couple and one other person found the baby in front of an uncompleted building at New Legon.

The prosecution said they picked up the baby and took him to the Lakeside Estate Police Station, where they were requested to take the baby to the Adentan DOVVSU office for action to be taken.

It said the accused persons agreed to the request.

They then sent the baby to the Ashalley Botcwey Health Centre and the nurses on duty administered first aid to him and handed him over to the couple to be taken to the Police Station.

However, the prosecution said from the health centre, they sent the baby home.

The prosecution told the court that the Greater Accra Regional Director of Social Welfare had information that an abandoned baby had been picked up and sent to the Ashalley Botwe Health Centre.

It said the Director gave the telephone number of Edward to the complainant and instructed her to pursue the case and rescue the baby.

The prosecution said the complainant called the number and Edward answered the call. The complainant then introduced herself as the head of Adenta Municipal Social Welfare Officer and informed Edward that she was calling to “get custody” of the baby.

It said when Edward heard this, he informed the complainant that his phone battery was draining fast and promised to get back to her.

The prosecution said Edward, however, did not get back to the complainant as promised. The complainant and her team proceeded to the health Centre but met neither the baby nor the accused persons.

It said the nurses on duty confirmed that they directed the couple to send the baby to the Police after administering care to him.

The prosecution said all efforts made by the officials of the Department of Social Welfare to trace the couple or the baby failed.

It said the complainant, therefore, reported the incident to the Police.

The prosecution said the Police together with the complainant went to the health centre where the contact number of Naomi was obtained.

When Naomi was contacted by the Police, she informed the Police that the baby was in her custody but several appeals to either report at the Police station with baby or give directions to her house to enable the Police to take custody of the baby yielded no results.

The prosecution said after several calls to Edward, the Police managed to establish contact with him, and he promised to be at the Police Station but failed to do so.

It said several calls made by the Police to get Edward to deliver the baby to the Police Station yielded no results.

The Court heard that Edward, during one of the calls, told the Police that “he would resist any attempt by the Department of Social welfare to take the baby away from him and his wife.”

Edward, however, reported at the station but without the baby.

The police, therefore, escorted Edward to his house at New Legon where the baby was found in the custody of Naomi, his wife.

It said the baby was rescued and Naomi was also arrested.

During investigation, Naomi in her caution statement admitted that after the initial report to the Police, she “developed a special love for the baby and she had wanted to keep him.”

It said when Naomi informed her husband, Edward, he agreed to her decision to keep the baby.

Ken Ofori-Atta’s removal is the reshuffle needed, not replacements – NDC Chairman

0

A National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman has told Ghanaians, especially the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who see the replacement of ministers in Nana Addo’s regime as a reshuffle, that they do not appreciate and understand the concept.

Reacting to some changes in the Nana Addo administration, including the nomination of some party members to replace resigned ministers and the movement of some to ministries, Nhyiaeso NDC chairman Ernest Afayam notes that this is not a ministerial reshuffle.

He told Ultimate FM morning show host Julius Caesar Anadem that Ghanaians were expecting the removal, not just replacement, of a key non-performing minister, the Finance Minister.

“This can’t be a reshuffle; what the president has done has no economic benefit, no technical benefit; how can this be a ministerial reshuffle?” he quizzed.

“You have a car that has a bad engine, and, in this case, I am referring to the finance minister; why is he still there? The reshuffle Ghanaians wanted was the removal of Ken, the finance minister, so the car of government could move well. There is no confidence in what the president has done. No wonder we are where we are with our economy, which has now crushed,” he lamented.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has nominated three persons, two of whom are Members of Parliament, to replace ministers who have resigned from their positions.

These are the ministers of Trade and Industry, Agriculture, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Mr. Kobina Tahir Hammond, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Adansi Asokwa, has been nominated as Minister of Trade and Industry to replace Mr. John Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen.

Member of Parliament for Abetifi, Brian Acheampong, has been appointed Minister-designate for Food and Agriculture.

Member of Parliament for Karaga, Mohammed Amin Adam, who was stationed at the Energy Ministry as deputy minister, has been given a new post. He has been appointed Minister of State at the Finance Ministry. He is set to replace Charles Adu Boahen.

Stephen Asamoah Boateng has been appointed Minister-designate for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

Herbert Krapah, who was Deputy Minister at the Trade Ministry has been moved to the Energy Ministry as Deputy Minister-designate. He replaces Mohammed Amin Adam.
