Today in History: The 1964 Flagstaff House Kitchen Brawl: President Nkrumah vs. Constable Ametewee, and How Supt. Dagarti Died

Today in History :On November 12, 1964, a Constable named Seth Nicholas Kwame Ametewee attempted to assassinate President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana at the Flagstaff House, the presidential residence. The assassination attempt failed, but it resulted in the death of Police Superintendent Salifu Dagarti, who shielded Nkrumah from Ametewee’s gunfire.

The assassination attempt took place as Nkrumah was returning to Christiansborg Castle for lunch after leaving his office at the Flagstaff House. Ametewee, who had only been transferred to Flagstaff House a day or two earlier, fired five shots at Nkrumah from behind some cover. Two of the shots hit Nkrumah’s shirt, but he was unharmed thanks to his bullet-proof vest.

After firing the shots, Ametewee chased Nkrumah into the kitchen of the Flagstaff House. Dagarti, who was with Nkrumah at the time, intervened and tried to disarm Ametewee. However, Ametewee clubbed Dagarti down with the butt of his rifle and then shot him three times. Dagarti died from his injuries.

Nkrumah managed to escape from the kitchen and run to safety. Ametewee was arrested and later tried and convicted of attempted murder. He was sentenced to death, but his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment.

The 1964 Flagstaff House Kitchen Brawl remains one of the most infamous events in Ghanaian history. It was a stark reminder of the dangers that Nkrumah faced as president of a newly independent country. It also highlighted the importance of the loyalty and dedication of his security personnel.

Mahama will be President again; God has had a change of mind – Owusu-Bempah

Rev. Isaac Owusu Bempah, the leader of Glorious Word and Power Ministry, has prophesied that former President John Mahama will be elected President of Ghana again in the 2024 general elections. This is in a direct reversal of his earlier prophecy in 2019 that Mahama would never be President again.

In a recent interview with Paul Adom-Otchere on Good Evening Ghana, Owusu Bempah explained that God had had a change of mind about Mahama’s political career. He said that Mahama had repented of his sins and had sought God’s forgiveness, and that God had forgiven him and restored him to favor.

“God has had a change of mind about John Mahama,” Owusu Bempah said. “He has repented of his sins and sought God’s forgiveness, and God has forgiven him and restored him to favor. Mahama will be President again in 2024.”

Owusu Bempah’s prophecy has come as a surprise to many, especially those who remember his earlier prophecy that Mahama would never be President again. However, Owusu Bempah has insisted that his new prophecy is accurate and that Mahama will indeed be elected President in 2024.

“I am not a politician,” Owusu Bempah said. “I am a prophet of God. I speak what God tells me to speak. God has told me that John Mahama will be President again in 2024, and that is what I am saying.”

It remains to be seen whether Owusu Bempah’s prophecy will come true. However, his prophecy has certainly generated a lot of interest and discussion in Ghana. It will be interesting to see how the 2024 general elections play out and whether Mahama will indeed be elected President again.

Owusu Bempah’s prophecy is a significant one, given his reputation as a prophet in Ghana. His prophecies have come true in the past, and he is widely respected by many Ghanaians. If his prophecy that Mahama will be President again comes true, it would be a major victory for the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

However, it is important to note that Owusu Bempah’s prophecy is not universally accepted. Some people believe that his prophecies are politically motivated, and that he is using his platform to promote the NDC. Others believe that his prophecies are simply wrong.

Only time will tell whether Owusu Bempah’s prophecy that Mahama will be President again will come true. However, his prophecy is sure to generate a lot of debate and discussion in Ghana in the coming months.

Voter Exhibition Exercise Ends Today, EC Encourages Voters to Verify Their Details: The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) is urging prospective voters to verify their details in the voter register before the end of the voter exhibition exercise today, Tuesday, November 7, 2023.

The exercise began on Friday, November 3, and has been ongoing at all 38,622 polling stations across the country from 7:00am to 6:00pm each day.

The voter exhibition exercise is to afford prospective voters the opportunity to cross-check their details as captured in the register, particularly for those who were captured during the limited registration between Tuesday, September 12 and Monday, October 2.

Despite incessant cases of low turnout at most exhibition centers, the Chair of the Commission, Jean Mensa, has said that most prospective voters are making use of digitization to verify their details.

She said the EC has made available a short code – 71381# – for online verification at a fee of GHp50.

The district level and unit committee elections will be held on Tuesday, December 19, 2023.

Voters Advised to Check Their Details

The EC is advising voters to check their details in the voter register carefully to ensure that their names are spelled correctly, that their dates of birth are correct, and that they are registered at the correct polling station.

If there are any errors, voters can request for corrections to be made at the exhibition center.

Voters are also advised to check that their voter ID cards are valid and that they are in good condition. If a voter’s ID card is damaged or lost, they can apply for a replacement at the exhibition center.

Why is Voter Verification Important?

Voter verification is important to ensure that the voter register is accurate and up-to-date. It also helps to prevent voter fraud.

When voters verify their details in the voter register, they are helping to ensure that they will be able to vote on Election Day.

If a voter’s name is not on the voter register, or if their details are incorrect, they will not be able to vote.

How to Verify Your Voter Details

Voters can verify their details in the voter register in two ways:

  • In person at their polling station
  • Online using the short code 71381#

To verify your voter details in person:

  1. Go to your polling station during the exhibition period.
  2. Ask an EC official to help you verify your details.
  3. The EC official will look up your name in the voter register and confirm your details.
  4. If there are any errors, the EC official will help you to correct them.

To verify your voter details online:

  1. Dial 71381# on your mobile phone.
  2. Enter your voter ID number.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

The EC is encouraging all prospective voters to verify their details in the voter register before the end of the voter exhibition exercise today.

You have till November 11 to apologise to Samira Bawumia – NMC warns Power FM

You have till November 11 to apologise to Samira Bawumia – NMC warns Power FM :The National Media Commission (NMC) has demanded an apology from the management of Authentic Media Company Limited, the company that runs Power FM, to Samira Bawumia, the wife of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

“You permitted your station, Power FM, to be utilized as a platform for a gender-based slander against H.E. Hajia Samira Bawumia on Wednesday, November 1, 2023. This perverted and debased broadcast also aimed to instigate ethnic strife and disparage the whole Fulani Community in Ghana. Such behavior has no place in our pursuit of national unity, peace, and prosperity, the NMC stated in a letter signed by its Executive Secretary, George Sarpong, and addressed to the media outlet’s CEO.

“Your presenter’s phoney protestation was unprofessional and deceptively calculated to egg the commentator on,” the NMC noted. Your presentation shifted from being a moderator to an advocate for vulgarity.

We kindly request your apology to the Fulani Community and H.E. Hajia Samira Bawumia. The NMC emphasized, “We also ask that you extend your apology to the Ghanaian people whose sensibilities you offended with that broadcast.”

“Present evidence of same to the Commission before November 11, 2023, after which date you may hear further from the Commission,” is what the NMC is requesting of the media firm.

Prof. Gyampo criticizes EC for their “poor and shoddy” results declaration in the NPP flagbearer election

Professor Ransford Gyampo, a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, has requested that the Electoral Commission (EC) announce election results in a straightforward and correct manner.

This comes after Dr. Serebour Quiacoo, the Director of Elections, made a mistake on Saturday, November 4, 2023, when announcing the results of the New Patriotic Party’s presidential primary.

The flagbearer-elect, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, was given the wrong percentage of 91% by Dr. Quaicoo, rather than the accurate 61%.

Additionally, he withheld the percentages received by the other contenders, revealing just Dr. Bawumia’s.

In a statement released on Sunday, Prof. Gyampo said: “Dr. Serebour Quiacoo handled yesterday’s Electoral Commission announcement of the results of the NPP flagbearer elections very poorly and shoddily. Even a basic computation and declaration of all the candidate percentages was beyond his capabilities. The EC needs to be transparent about the percentage of votes each candidate received. This can’t be left up to personal calculations.

“I’m still not sure why the Electoral Commission made mathematical errors when announcing the results. Is it not possible for the EC to declare results accurately? When they announced the election results in 2020, they made corrections more than five times. They reported 91% instead of 61% yesterday as well. Additionally, they were unable to provide a straightforward calculation of the remaining candidates’ percentages of votes. This never happened before.

Prof. Gyampo underlined once more that the public’s faith in the Commission is not bolstered by the EC’s persistent mathematical blunders.

“Aren’t institutions supposed to strive for continuous improvement? “Why should the EC Director of Elections tremble to the point of making mistakes just because very mortal party people are present?” he asked.

Thus, the political science lecturer urged organizations to rise above the shortcomings of individuals and pursue excellence.

Read the full statement from Prof Gyampo below:

What is the source of the ECs Mathematical Challenges in Declaring Results? Prof Gyampo Quizzes

Or “I don’t understand the mathematical challenges of the EC in declaring results”

I still do not understand the causes of the mathematical mistakes of the Electoral Commission in declaring results. Can’t the EC be accurate in the declaration of results? The last time in 2020, they corrected themselves more than 5 times in declaring the election results.

Yesterday too, they announced 91% instead of 61%. They could also not do a simple computation of percentages of votes for the rest of the candidates. This is unprecedented.

The sudden plague of mathematical challenges on the part of the EC doesn’t auger well for the quest to build public confidence in the Commission.

Yesterday, the whole announcement of the results of the NPP flag bearer elections by the Electoral Commission, was poorly and shoddily done by Dr. Serebour Quiacoo.

He couldn’t even do a simple computation and announcement of all the percentages for the candidates.

The EC must be clear in telling all about the percentage of votes garnered by all aspirants. This cannot be left to individual computations.

Can’t institutions work to perfect themselves over time? Why should the mere presence of very mortal party human beings make the EC Director of Elections shiver to the point of making mistakes?

Institutions must transcend individuals!
