Mahama Reveals $2.5 Billion Energy Debt, Blames Outgoing Government for Gas Shortages

0

President-Elect John Dramani Mahama has addressed the ongoing energy challenges in the country, revealing that the outgoing government has left behind a staggering $2.5 billion debt.

Mahama criticized the current administration for managing to keep the lights on at a high cost, incurring substantial debt in the process. He explained that the government failed to pay off outstanding debts to energy suppliers, instead allocating funds to other sectors deemed more urgent.

Expressing concern over the losses incurred by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Mahama attributed these issues to poor governance decisions. “Instead of settling the debts owed to energy suppliers, the government chose to spend money on importing crude oil,” Mahama said.

He highlighted that the government prioritized importing crude oil over investing in Ghana’s own abundant gas reserves. By developing these resources, the country could supply cheaper gas and save billions of dollars annually. However, Mahama noted that the government’s actions have driven out upstream players, forcing them to seek refuge in neighboring Côte d’Ivoire.

“X-Mobile has exited, and Hesfield, which became AKA, has remained redundant for years. Talo, with discoveries, needs support to boost production, but instead, the government has engaged in unnecessary arbitration over taxes. The result has been a drastic decline in gas production,” Mahama stated.

Mahama’s remarks underscore the urgent need for reforms in the energy sector to address the mounting debt and ensure a stable and sustainable energy supply for the country.

In a recent interview on Lawson FM, LilWin emphasized that he maintains a good relationship with both actors and that any claims suggesting otherwise are baseless.

LilWin explained that, due to the nature of their work, they only meet during events such as weddings, funerals, or other programs that require their presence. “Agya Koo is like a father to us; he’s a legend that everyone respects,” LilWin said. “We don’t have personal issues. After work, we all go our separate ways, and we only meet at these events.” He also noted that whenever he sees Agya Koo, he always greets him, and Agya Koo checks in on his well-being before they part ways.

He added that his relationship with Kwaku Manu is also friendly and playful, with no conflict between them.

Furthermore, LilWin made it clear that he doesn’t allow anyone around him to stir trouble between him and his colleagues. “I don’t tolerate people trying to create problems between me and my fellow actors,” he said. “If someone tells me something, I immediately reach out to the person involved to clear things up. The people around me don’t gossip or feed me false information.” Unfortunately, LilWin mentioned that some colleagues, instead of approaching him directly, choose to hold on to rumors and act distant or give him attitude when they meet at events.

LilWin Recounts Painful Start to Acting Career

Kumawood actor Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, has opened up about the painful struggles he faced at the beginning of his acting career. In a heartfelt interview on Lawson TV, LilWin shared the humiliation, insults, and rejection he endured from some colleagues and producers who doubted his talent.

LilWin revealed that some colleagues mocked his hygiene, claiming he smelled, and criticized his acting skills, saying he wasn’t good enough to be on set. “One marketer told me that featuring me in a movie was a waste of time,” he recounted. Some actors even physically humiliated him by slapping him with slippers during scenes. “I thought it was just acting, but after the shoot, I’d hear them saying they wished they had hit me harder so I’d quit acting altogether,” he said.

The challenges continued when a director asked him to act in four movies without payment. When LilWin insisted on being paid, the director reluctantly agreed to pay for only one. However, as LilWin’s popularity grew, the same people who doubted him began to request his presence in their movies. “Those same people who doubted me now tell directors to add me to every movie because, without me, it won’t sell,” he said proudly.

Today, LilWin is one of Ghana’s most celebrated actors, a testament to his resilience, determination, and self-belief. His journey from rejection to stardom serves as a powerful reminder that perseverance can overcome even the harshest critics.
