NPP’s Afenyo-Markin Asserts Control Over Effutu, Rejects NDC’s MCE Nomination

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the outgoing Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, has made a bold statement regarding the political control of Effutu Municipality in Ghana’s Central Region. With the National Democratic Congress (NDC) preparing to take over government following their win in the December 7 general elections, Afenyo-Markin, who will soon become the Minority Leader, has instructed the NDC not to nominate a Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Effutu.

Afenyo-Markin argued that since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) holds all the Assembly seats and the position of Presiding Member in Effutu, the NPP effectively remains in control of the municipality. During a recent event, he declared, “Listen, in the Effutu constituency, we [NPP] are the government. In Effutu, the NPP is the government because all the Assembly seats are for the NPP. We have the Presiding Member, and I want to tell the NDC that we are not ready to change this NPP government in Effutu. So, we are going to work together, and they shouldn’t bother nominating an MCE. It won’t happen! We control Effutu… no way, no way,” which was met with enthusiastic support from his party members.

Effutu has been a consistent stronghold for the NPP, with Afenyo-Markin securing his parliamentary seat since 2013, after ousting the NDC’s Mike Allen Hammah, a former Minister for Lands and Natural Resources. This declaration by Afenyo-Markin suggests a continuation of NPP influence in local governance despite the national shift in power, potentially setting the stage for political tensions in the municipality.

He further elaborated on the nature of the abuse, stating, “He isolated me, broke me, and lied to me about everything.” Buffa lamented the lack of support from those who knew of his plight, mentioning that his pleas for help were ignored, which led to his withdrawal from seeking further assistance. “Those that knew where I spoke my silence out loud, the few who most could have helped me who knew how severe, you turned your back, so I stopped reaching out to anyone,” he noted.
