Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo has filed an injunction at the Supreme Court, seeking to halt a committee’s inquiry into petitions calling for her removal from office.
The application, submitted on May 21, 2025, lists the Attorney-General and committee members as respondents. Justice Torkornoo is requesting 15 reliefs, including the nullification of the presidential warrant suspending her from office, issued on April 22, 2025.
The Chief Justice argues that the committee, formed to investigate three petitions against her, violates her constitutional rights. She is asking the court to rule that her right to a fair hearing can only be restricted under concerns related to public morality, safety, or order.
Justice Torkornoo further contends that President [Name]’s determination of a prima facie case, alongside her suspension, represents an unjustified move to remove her from office—one that undermines judicial independence. She claims that the failure to provide her with a formal prima facie determination before establishing the inquiry committee invalidates the proceedings.
Additionally, the application challenges the qualifications of three committee members—Daniel Yaw Domelovo, Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo, and Professor James Sefah Dzisah—to perform their investigative duties, citing constitutional and legal provisions.
