Francis Cudjoe, a 20-year-old carpenter, is serving a 50-year prison sentence for defiling a seven-year-old primary two pupil in Abankyi, a suburb of Tarkwa. The victim, whose identity is protected, lived with her mother, Hathia Ama Mary, a close friend of Cudjoe and operator of a local chop bar.
According to reports, Cudjoe, who often ran errands for Hathia, exploited their close relationship to gain access to the victim’s room, where he sexually assaulted her. The crime came to light when the victim confided in her teachers, who noticed her distress. The teachers promptly informed Hathia, who reported the matter to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) in Tarkwa, leading to Cudjoe’s arrest.
Cudjoe faced two counts of defilement, each carrying a 25-year sentence, to be served consecutively. During his trial, he reportedly knelt in the courtroom, tearfully apologizing to those present, including the victim’s mother. Despite his plea for leniency, the court imposed the lengthy sentence due to the severity of the crime.
Nearly a year into Cudjoe’s incarceration, his mother spoke to Crime Check TV Gh, claiming her son was coerced by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to plead guilty. She maintains his innocence, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding his confession.
The case has sparked discussions in the community about child protection and the importance of vigilance in safeguarding vulnerable children. Authorities urge parents and guardians to report any suspicions of abuse promptly to ensure justice is served.
