Kumasi-based online journalist and founder of Dklassgh.com, Sammy Amedetor, remains in police detention five days after his arrest, contrary to earlier reports that linked his ordeal solely to the publication of excerpts from Anas Aremeyaw Anas’ “Number 12” documentary.
Credible sources close to the investigation have disclosed to The Publisher Newspaper that the case is being handled by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service, not the National Signals Bureau (NSB) as initially reported. The NSB only provided technical assistance in tracking and arresting Amedetor in the early hours of Friday, November 15, 2025.
According to the sources, while the journalist did publish a clip from the famous 2018 exposé on football corruption, the core of the police investigation centres on allegations of cybercrime involving AI-generated deepfake videos.
Investigators are reportedly probing claims that Amedetor used artificial intelligence tools to create and distribute manipulated videos featuring real individuals without their consent. At least one high-profile complainant, former National Communications Authority (NCA) Board Chairman Mr. Isaac Osei-Bonsu, is said to have lodged a formal report that triggered the probe.
Amedetor was released briefly on Friday night and asked to report back to the CID on Tuesday, November 19. He honoured the invitation but has been held in custody since then, with sources indicating that the police are still gathering evidence.
The CID is expected to issue an official statement on the matter in the coming days.
Journalists and free expression advocates have expressed concern over the arrest, stressing that any investigation must be transparent and should not be used to intimidate legitimate media practitioners.
