A bomb threat has resulted in the closure of Interstate 85 in both directions in Greenville County, South Carolina. The situation was confirmed by Governor Henry McMaster, who announced the closure of I-85 near Mile Marker 44 due to a reported bomb threat that emerged during a routine traffic stop by the South Carolina Transport Police.

Multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office, the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED), and the FBI, are responding to the incident. The bomb squad is currently on the scene, working to sweep and clear a tractor-trailer involved in the traffic stop before reopening the highway.

Public officials urge motorists to avoid I-85 in the vicinity of mile marker 44 until further notice. Detours have been established, with specific routes provided for both northbound and southbound traffic to navigate around the closure:

  • Northbound Traffic: Exit I-85 at mile marker 40, turn left onto SC 153, travel to SC 20 (Piedmont Highway), then left onto Bracken Road, right onto US 25 (Augusta Road), and left onto SC 291 back to I-85 at mile marker 46.
  • Southbound Traffic: Exit at mile marker 46, turn left onto SC 291, travel south to US 25 (Augusta Road), right onto Bracken Road, right onto SC 20 (Piedmont Highway), and left onto SC 153 back to I-85 at mile marker 40.

The public is advised to stay updated through local news sources or official social media channels for further information on when the road might reopen. This incident underscores the importance of following law enforcement directives and staying informed during such emergencies.
