Assessing the State of Adequate Housing in Ghana

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing is set to embark on an official country mission to Ghana. This high-level visit aims to evaluate the current housing landscape, the ongoing urban housing deficit, and the living conditions within informal settlements across major cities like Accra and Kumasi.

As urbanization accelerates across the country, access to affordable and secure shelter remains a critical challenge for low-income earners. The UN envoy’s findings are expected to shed light on systemic gaps in housing policy and real estate development.

Key Focus Areas of the UN Mission

During the multi-day visit, the Special Rapporteur will engage with key state institutions, local government authorities, civil society organizations, and communities affected by housing precarity. Central to the discussions will be:

  • The national housing deficit and affordability metrics.
  • Evictions and tenure security in informal settlements.
  • Access to basic amenities such as clean water, electricity, and sanitation.
  • Government initiatives aimed at affordable housing delivery.

Addressing Urbanization Challenges

Ghana’s rapid population growth has placed immense pressure on urban infrastructure. Despite various public-private partnerships and state-sponsored housing projects over the years, bridging the gap between demand and supply remains a formidable hurdle. Stakeholders hope this UN mission will catalyze renewed national commitment toward achieving sustainable urban development goals.
