Michael Shumway Lee, better known as Mike Lee, was born in the United States on June 4, 1971.

Before working as a clerk for Samuel Alito, who was then a judge on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals, he began his career as a clerk for the U.S. District Court for the District of Utah.

After that, from 2002 to 2005, Lee worked as an assistant US attorney for the District of Utah. From 2005 to 2006, he was employed by Utah Governor Jon Huntsman’s administration as general counsel in the governor’s office.

After Alito was appointed to the U.S. Supreme Court, he later worked as a clerk once more, but this time for Alito. He entered the party caucus process in 2010 during the Tea Party movement to take on incumbent three-term Republican senator Bob Bennett.

Lee was elected and has been the senior senator from Utah since 2011. He promised not to hold office for more than two terms when running against Republican senator Bob Bennett; nevertheless, in 2022, he ran for (and was elected to) a third term.

However, Lee finally voted to certify the result. Lee collaborated with and supported the Trump administration in its efforts to annul the 2020 presidential election. He is a Republican Party supporter.
