Nicole Perez, a 28-year-old mother from Metairie, Louisiana, has been tragically identified as one of the victims in the devastating New Orleans attack on January 1, 2025. Social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and X (formerly Twitter) have become forums for mourning, with users sharing condolences for Perez, who leaves behind a 4-year-old son.
The attack was executed by Shamsud-Din Jabbar, who drove his truck into a group of celebrants on Bourbon Street, resulting in the death of 15 individuals and injuring many more. Although official victim identification is pending, family and friends have confirmed Perez’s death on social media and to various news outlets.
Perez, who had recently been promoted to deli manager at a location in Metairie, was enjoying New Year’s Eve with friends when the horrific event unfolded. She was rushed to University Hospital but did not survive her injuries. Her employer and friend, Kimberly Usher-Fall, spoke to ABC News about Perez’s character, describing her as an excellent mother and a vibrant young woman who was improving her life. Perez had moved into a new apartment and was actively involved in her son Melvin’s (Melo) education, teaching him reading and math.
In response to the tragedy, Usher-Fall initiated a GoFundMe campaign for Perez’s burial costs and to support Melo’s future needs. The fundraiser has already collected over $30,000 towards its $50,000 goal.
The outpouring of grief on social media reflects the community’s shock and sorrow. Comments on posts related to the incident include sentiments like, “Poor kid,” on Instagram, X highlighting the concern for Perez’s young son. On Facebook, users expressed their sympathy, with one writing, “Prayers for this beautiful young woman’s family and friends. So tragic.”
