Kanton SHS Demands Urgent Action on Staffing and Tech

Management and stakeholders at Kanton Senior High School have expressed profound gratitude for recent improvements in student feeding programs and physical infrastructure. However, the institution’s leadership has issued a passionate appeal to the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to address a biting deficit in academic staff and technological resources.

Speaking on the current state of affairs at the school, administrators highlighted that while the physical structures have seen commendable expansion, the lack of adequate teaching personnel and functional information and communications technology (ICT) laboratories threatens to compromise the quality of 21st-century learning for students in the Upper West Region.

Infrastructure and Feeding Gains at Kanton SHS

In recent terms, Kanton SHS has benefited from targeted governmental interventions aimed at boosting secondary education infrastructure. Dormitory blocks, administration spaces, and classroom complexes have seen significant facelifts, providing a much more conducive environment for boarding and day students alike.

Furthermore, school authorities noted a stabilizing trend in the national school feeding grants, ensuring that students receive regular meals without the erratic interruptions that previously plagued administrative planning. These foundational gains have created a stable backdrop for academic progression, allowing students to focus more intently on their studies.

The Critical Need for Teachers and ICT Labs

Despite these positive strides, the administration at Kanton SHS emphasized that human capital and technological tools remain the biggest bottlenecks to holistic student development. Key challenges highlighted include:

  • Severe Teacher Shortages: Certain core and elective subjects remain understaffed, forcing existing tutors to handle oversized classes and shoulder excessive workloads.
  • Obsolete or Non-Existent ICT Facilities: In an era where digital literacy is paramount for secondary and tertiary academic success, students lack access to modern computers and reliable internet infrastructure.
  • Practical Training Gaps: Without fully equipped computer laboratories, students sitting for national ICT examinations face a severe disadvantage compared to their counterparts in urban centers like Accra and Kumasi.

Call to Action for the Ministry of Education

Educational advocates and PTA representatives are urging regional directorates to fast-track postings of newly trained teachers to remote and deprived second-cycle institutions like Kanton SHS. Bridging the rural-urban digital divide requires deliberate, heavy investments in school technology to ensure that every Ghanaian child, regardless of geographical location, is equipped to compete in the modern global economy.
