Speaking at a recent stakeholders’ engagement, the sector minister issued a stern directive calling on traditional authorities across the country to actively enforce anti-bushfire bye-laws within their respective jurisdictions. The government believes that grassroots enforcement led by chiefs is critical to curbing the annual cycle of destruction caused by uncontrolled bushfires.
Every year, vast tracts of farmlands, economic trees, and residential properties are lost to preventable fires, often triggered by hunting, palm wine tapping, and poor farming methods. By empowering local governance structures and traditional stools, the state hopes to establish a deterrent framework that holds perpetrators accountable at the community level.
The Economic and Ecological Impact
Uncontrolled fires pose a severe threat to Ghana’s agricultural sector, food security, and rural livelihoods. When cash crops like cocoa, cashew, and oil palm are destroyed, rural communities suffer severe economic setbacks that take years to recover from. Furthermore, repeated bushfires degrade the soil, deplete the forest cover, and worsen the effects of climate change.

Local councils and district assemblies have been instructed to collaborate with chiefs to update existing anti-bushfire bye-laws and ensure swift punitive measures for offenders.
Communities are also being encouraged to form volunteer fire watchdog committees. These groups will work closely with the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) to monitor high-risk zones, embark on public education campaigns, and report individuals engaging in indiscriminate burning.

Educating farmers on safe land-clearing techniques and alternative farming methods remains a core pillar of the national strategy.
