The international cricketing community is in mourning following the passing of veteran sports administrator Godfrey Dabarera, a towering figure who played an instrumental role in shaping the administrative landscape of Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) over several decades.

A Lifelong Devotion to Cricket Administration

For decades, Godfrey Dabarera was widely recognized as one of the most dedicated and steadfast administrators in Sri Lankan sports. His deep involvement in Sri Lanka Cricket coincided with pivotal eras in the nation’s cricketing history, steering domestic tournament frameworks and serving across critical governance panels.

Dabarera held senior positions at SLC, including terms on executive committees and key oversight bodies. Known for his meticulous organizational acumen, he was heavily relied upon to manage tournament scheduling, logistics, and compliance during high-stakes domestic and international fixtures hosted in the island nation.

Building Grassroots and School Cricket Foundations

Beyond his executive work at Sri Lanka Cricket headquarters, Dabarera was profoundly committed to school cricket, widely acknowledged as the heartbeat of Sri Lanka’s sports pipeline. An alumnus and passionate supporter of St. Joseph’s College, Colombo, he remained actively involved in nurturing teenage talent and bridging the transition from inter-school rivalries to first-class domestic cricket.

Colleagues frequently noted his willingness to assist junior players from diverse backgrounds, ensuring that deserving athletes received equipment, sponsorship links, and pathway guidance to compete at higher provincial and national developmental tiers.

Tributes Pour in from the Cricketing World

News of his passing prompted tributes from across the Asian sports fraternity, with former national players, umpires, and fellow board executives reflecting on his integrity and mentorship.

“Godfrey was a rare administrator who cared genuinely about the game and the individuals playing it, long before corporate commercialization took over,” shared one veteran sports journalist in Colombo. “His institutional knowledge and calm stewardship during turbulent governance transitions made him invaluable to Sri Lankan sports.”

An Enduring Legacy in Sri Lankan Sports

Funeral and memorial arrangements are expected to draw former national team captains, domestic club representatives, and generations of athletes who benefited from his decades of leadership. As Sri Lanka Cricket moves forward in an increasingly modern, high-tech era, the foundational contributions of dedicated guardians like Godfrey Dabarera remain permanently embedded in the country’s rich sporting heritage.
