ACCRA — In a landmark move for public health in West Africa, the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research, is set to launch Ghana’s first national genomic bio-bank dedicated exclusively to sickle cell disease (SCD). Scheduled to open in late November, the facility aims to centralize genetic data from over 50,000 patients across the country to accelerate localized therapeutic breakthroughs.

Ghana bears one of the highest burdens of sickle cell anaemia globally, with approximately two percent of all newborns affected annually. Traditional treatment pipelines have long relied on pharmaceuticals developed for Western populations, which often fail to account for the unique genetic variations prevalent in the West African gene pool. The new repository will utilize high-throughput sequencing to map these variations, paving the way for precision medicine tailored to the region’s specific demographic profile.

Lead researcher Dr. Akosua Mensah highlighted the urgency of the initiative during a press briefing in Accra. ‘For decades, our medical approach has been generalized. By establishing this bio-bank, we are putting African genomes at the center of African healthcare solutions, moving us closer to gene-silencing therapies and more accessible curative options,’ Mensah stated.

The project has garnered substantial backing from the West African Health Organization (WAHO) and international philanthropic foundations, signaling a new era of genomic sovereignty for the sub-region. Construction of the climate-controlled cryogenic storage facility is currently in its final phases, with clinical trials expected to leverage the bio-bank’s resources by early next year.
