The Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) is still working to resolve the technical challenge it was experiencing in vending for prepaid consumers on E-cash and PNS metering systems of the company. The systems have been down for the past four days, since Tuesday, September 27, 2022. National Security and the Cyber Security Authority are on hand to help restore the systems.
Although there is electricity available, many prepaid system users are unable to top up their credits in order to connect to power, forcing them to resort to sleeping in the dark. The ECG is collaborating with National Security and the Cyber Security Authority to assist in system restoration. National Security is looking into the system’s possible causes and ways to prevent a repeat of the incident.
According to information obtained by Graphic Online from insiders at ECG, the systems have been infiltrated by outsiders who are now in charge of the source codes and have refused to give them to the ECG. In order to ascertain how the system could have malfunctioned and how to prevent a recurrence in the future, Graphic Online is informed that the National Security Agency and the Cyber Security Authority are assisting. Aside from that, the ECG is currently conducting an extensive audit of its system to determine what led to the technical malfunction that has impacted service for many of its prepaid subscribers across the nation.

There is a high suspicion of the system having been hacked, hence the support from the Cyber Security Authority. Extended working hours at district offices In a third announcement issued on Friday night (September 30, 2022) on the anomaly as part of a series of announcements the ECG has been making since Wednesday, the ECG said due to the technical challenge, “the company will extend its working hours at all district offices this weekend as follows: Saturday, 1st October, 2022 – 9.00am – 4.00pm Sunday, 2nd October, 2022 – 9.00am – 4.00
