For generations, the seasonal scarcity of potable water forced villagers to rely on shallow, stagnant hand-dug wells, resulting in a persistent resurgence of waterborne parasites, most notably Guinea worm disease, which had long crippled the local agricultural workforce.

However, a collaborative initiative spearheaded by the University for Development Studies and local community health workers has introduced an indigenous, low-cost bio-sand filtration system. Constructed using locally sourced clay, river sand, and crushed charcoal, these decentralized filters successfully trap biological pathogens without requiring electricity or imported replacement parts. Within six months of installation, local clinics have reported a zero-incidence rate of guinea worm larvae in tested household water supplies.
