Bekwai MP Raises Alarm Over Inflation, Says Fufu Now Costs a Month’s Salary 2

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bekwai, Ralph Poku-Adusei, has expressed deep concerns over the soaring inflation under President John Dramani Mahama’s government, which has been in office for four months.

Speaking in an interview on Asaasepa Radio on May 15, 2025, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP stated that rising food prices have made it increasingly difficult for Ghanaians to afford essential commodities, noting that fufu, a staple Ghanaian dish made from pounded cassava and plantain, now costs the equivalent of a monthly salary.

“One of the most expensive commodities in the country right now is food. Food prices are extremely high. If you want to eat fufu at the moment, it is equal to someone’s monthly salary. When I visit my constituency, I see people struggling to afford food. The government must do better because people are starving,” he lamented.

Poku-Adusei highlighted other staggering price hikes, including 100 cedis for a single plantain, 50 cedis for a tuber of yam, and 50 cedis for tomatoes, stressing that both NPP and NDC supporters are suffering regardless of political affiliations.

Additionally, he stated that the NPP has learned valuable lessons from the recent elections, adding that many Ghanaians now realize they “made a mistake” by re-electing the National Democratic Congress (NDC) into power.

The MP urged the government to ensure that the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi results in tangible benefits for citizens, particularly through measures to stabilize food prices and ease the economic burden on the populace.

His remarks have added to ongoing discussions on inflation, food security, and economic management under the current administration.

Stay tuned for updates on the government’s response to these concerns.
