Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, vice president, has paid respect to the late illustrious lawyer Akoto Ampaw, who passed away late last week.
Bawumia praised Ampaw for his exceptional humility and frankness.
Dr. Bawumia expressed his sympathies to Mr. Ampaw’s family in a Facebook post, mourning their loss and praying for their endurance during this trying time.
In his letter, he expressed his sadness over the passing of his buddy, attorney Anthony Akoto-Ampaw (Sheyshey). Sheyshey had exceptional commitment, honesty, loyalty, and modesty. I’m sorry for the Akoto-Ampaw family’s tragic loss, and I trust that God will keep them safe during this trying time. May my friend’s soul, who has passed away, rest in peace.
On October 20, 2023, at the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC), Akoto Ampaw, a well-known lawyer, human rights advocate, and opponent of corruption, passed away.
He gained notoriety for his work as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s principal attorney during the 2020 election petition and as a member of the New Patriotic Party’s legal team during the 2013 Electoral Petition.
He has fought for equal justice and human rights throughout his career, and his areas of expertise include commercial law, corporate law, industrial law, litigation, constitutional law, media law, labor law, and investment law.
Akoto Ampaw also made a point of speaking out against the anti-LGBTQ+ Bill that is presently being debated in Parliament.
He earned a B.L. from the Ghana School of Law in 1993 and an LL.B. from the University of Ghana in 1973. His departure leaves a big hole in Ghana’s judicial system and human rights movement.
