Afia Pokua and Mona Gucci Issue Second Apology to Otumfuo on Live TV 2

Accra, Ghana – September 22, 2024: In a heartfelt display of remorse, media personalities Afia Pokua and Mona Gucci issued a second public apology to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, during a live broadcast. This follows their initial apologies on social media for comments deemed disrespectful to the revered traditional leader.

The incident, which sparked widespread outrage among the Ashanti community, occurred during a segment on Mona Gucci’s show, “Bribi Gye Gye Wo,” aired on OnuaTV. Afia Pokua, a guest on the show, made remarks criticizing the Asantehene’s perceived silence on conflicts involving his subjects and other tribes, including the Bonos. The comments were met with significant backlash, prompting both women to seek forgiveness.

During the live broadcast, Mona Gucci, visibly contrite, expressed deep regret for her role in the incident. “When my guest came on the show, she made statements that hurt many. We are using this same platform to apologize. To our viewers around the world, including the Ashantis, we are truly sorry. We acknowledge your pain and concerns regarding this issue. I, Monalisa Abigail Sefakor Semeha, plead for your forgiveness. I apologize for everything that has transpired. The Asantehene is our father, and the Asanteman is our family. Please forgive us,” she said.

Afia Pokua, dressed in funeral attire and nearly in tears, delivered an extended apology. “I offer a sincere apology to the Otumfuo Osei Tutu II. I did not speak well at all, and I accept my wrongs. I am his grandchild, child, and niece. I bow and ask for his forgiveness. I also apologize to the entire Asanteman, both home and abroad. Please forgive me. My actions were not intentional; I ask that, despite your anger, you find it in your heart to forgive me. I erred; I goofed,” she stated.

Pokua also extended her apologies to her hometown Chief, the Kwahumanhene, and the people of Kwahu, acknowledging the embarrassment her words caused. She further apologized to her parents, family, friends, and workplace for the shame brought upon them.

The controversy has highlighted the sensitivity surrounding traditional leadership and the respect accorded to the Asantehene. Both women have pledged to ensure such incidents do not recur and have asked for the public’s understanding and forgiveness.
