Breaking: Legendary Ghanaian Gospel Musician Yaw Sarpong Passes Away 2

Kumasi, Ghana – January 20, 2026 – Ghana’s gospel music community is in deep mourning following the passing of veteran singer and composer Yaw Sarpong, founder and leader of the iconic Asomafo gospel group.

The news was confirmed earlier today by his longtime manager, Nana Poku Ashis, who spoke to multiple media outlets. Reports indicate that Yaw Sarpong died at Emena Hospital in Kumasi, where he had been receiving treatment amid ongoing health challenges, including a previous stroke from which he had partially recovered.

Further details on the exact cause of death have not yet been officially released.

Yaw Sarpong was a trailblazer in contemporary Akan gospel music, blending traditional highlife rhythms with powerful spiritual messages. Through Yaw Sarpong & Asomafo, he delivered timeless hits such as “Wo Haw Ne Hwan”, “Tie Obiaa”, “Aduro Yesu”, and “Awurade Kasa”, songs that continue to inspire worship in churches across Ghana, the diaspora, and beyond.

In recognition of his decades-long impact, he was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Telecel Ghana Music Awards in 2025.

His death follows closely on the heels of another tragic loss for the Asomafo family: key vocalist Maame Tiwaa passed away in early December 2025.

Tributes have already begun pouring in from fans, fellow artists, and media personalities across social platforms and news outlets.

The gospel fraternity and music lovers nationwide extend heartfelt condolences to his family, the Asomafo group members, and all who were blessed by his ministry and music.

May the soul of Yaw Sarpong rest in perfect peace. 🕊️

This is a developing story. More updates, including funeral arrangements, are expected in the coming days.
