In a move that solidifies the long-standing family stewardship of one of the NFL’s most historic franchises, ownership of the Chicago Bears has been officially confirmed under the continued leadership of the McCaskey and Ryan families.
Following the passing of principal owner Virginia Halas McCaskey in February 2025 at the age of 102, and the subsequent handling of a minor stake previously held by the estate of Andrew McKenna (who died in 2023), the NFL approved a transaction in September 2025 that transferred the 2.35% minority interest to the existing owners. This deal, which valued the Bears at a record $8.9 billion, saw two-thirds of the stake allocated to the McCaskey family and one-third to the Ryan family, resulting in the McCaskeys holding approximately 77% and the Ryans the remaining 23%.
George H. McCaskey, Virginia’s son and the team’s chairman since 2011, remains the primary control person, ensuring continuity in the franchise’s direction. The Bears, founded in 1920 (originally as the Decatur Staleys) and acquired by George Halas in 1921 for just $100, have remained under Halas-McCaskey family influence for over a century — a streak unmatched in professional sports.
The confirmation comes amid an exciting period for the team, which is currently competing in the 2026 NFL playoffs as NFC North champions and preparing to host a Wild Card matchup against the Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field. Fans have long celebrated the “Monsters of the Midway” legacy, and this ownership stability is seen as a foundation for continued progress on and off the field.
While the organization explores options for a new stadium — including its preferred site in Arlington Heights and potential alternatives in northwest Indiana due to stalled infrastructure support from Illinois lawmakers in 2026 — the focus remains on honoring the Bears’ storied history while building toward future success.
George McCaskey and team president/CEO Kevin Warren have emphasized the family’s commitment to keeping the Bears in Chicago and investing in the community. No major changes in control are anticipated, preserving the franchise’s family-oriented identity as it enters its next chapter.
