Afrobeats superstar Davido made headlines during a surprise appearance on content creator Carter Efe’s Twitch livestream on December 17, boldly calling on Twitch CEO Dan Clancy to elevate any potential deal for the streamer to a staggering $1 million.
In a viral moment captured live, Davido addressed the camera directly: “The CEO of Twitch, I know you’re going to hear this cause my voice get power, up the deal… we don’t want to see any 100 – up the deal to a million dollars.” The singer’s confident plea left Carter Efe reeling in disbelief, screaming and reacting with excitement as the stream exploded in popularity.
The three-hour session not only showcased Davido’s generosity but also shattered multiple African records on Twitch. The livestream peaked at over 83,000 concurrent viewers – the highest ever for an African creator – and amassed millions of total views. Carter Efe gained more than 160,000 followers in days, surging past fellow Nigerian streamer Shank Comics to become Africa’s most-followed on the platform with over 406,000 followers. He also became the first African streamer to surpass 20,000 subscribers.
Beyond the Twitch shoutout, Davido demonstrated his influence by personally calling Martell’s Global Marketing Manager live on air, securing an endorsement deal for Carter Efe on the spot. The gesture, along with recreating album artwork and engaging fans, underscored Davido’s reputation for uplifting emerging talents.
Carter Efe, a former skit maker turned musician and streamer, has seen his career skyrocket thanks to the collaboration. Fans and observers praised Davido’s actions, with many highlighting his philosophy of “we rise by lifting others.”
As of now, Twitch has not publicly responded to Davido’s call, but the viral moment has sparked widespread discussion about the growing influence of African creators on global platforms.
