Security Man Killed in Medical Liquid Oxygen Explosion at Eastern Regional Hospital

Date:

A security man was killed in a large medical liquid oxygen explosion at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua, Ghana on Thursday, September 21, 2023.

The victim was assisting with offloading the medical liquid oxygen at the hospital’s Oxygen Unit when one of the cylinders crashed on the ground and exploded. He sustained severe injuries to his face, upper arm, and abdomen. He was rushed to the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit but did not survive.

A witness, a security officer at the hospital, said that the company contracted to refill the gas did not have enough workers when they arrived at the hospital, so they requested assistance from the victim.

Shop operators around the hospital said they heard loud explosions during the incident, followed by screams for help from inside the hospital.

The management of the hospital has not yet commented on the incident.

This is a tragic accident, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends.
