Prosper Owusu, an Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED) third-year mathematics student, passed away when his body allegedly caught fire during a school hall parade.

On Friday, August 25, 2023, Owusu was one of several Opoku Ware II Hall students who were allegedly engaged in various activities outside the building.

He was hurt in the fire and received emergency medical care at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH), but he passed away on September 1, 2023.

The administration of the university has acknowledged that they are looking into the matter.

Students have been advised to stay away from risky activities in the interim.

Background
Owusu was reputed to be the “chief priest” of the university’s Opoku Ware Hall and was well-known for organizing rituals specific to the building.

In a social media video, Owusu is seen directing rituals by a fire while surrounded by his coworkers.

His clothes started to burn, but the flames couldn’t be put out.

Read below a statement by the management of the university.

Mr. Prosper Owusu, a third-year Mathematics Student of the Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED), was among some students of the Opoku Ware II Hall, who were allegedly performing some activities in the Hall, on Friday, August 25, 2023.

Prosper got injured and was sent to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) immediately for medical attention. He was reported dead on September 1, 2023.

The issues surrounding the incident at the Hall are being investigated. Management will give further updates.

Meanwhile, students have been cautioned to avoid activities that predispose them to risks and other dire consequences.

The University extends heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, students, and friends of the late Prosper Owusu.
