Sulemana Braimah, executive director of the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA), has made fun of the government’s upcoming plan to attribute the economic crisis to Europe’s failure to compensate for its colonization of Africa.

He believes that the administration will continue to cite Covid-19 and the Russia-Ukraine War as causes for the economy’s impending collapse in addition to this new factor.

His remark follows a request by President Akufo-Addo that European nations compensate for the devastation caused by the slave trade on the African continent.

Sulemana Braimah asserted on Twitter that the absence of strong leadership will prevent billions of dollars in reparations from having any impact.

What Akufo-Addo said

At the start of a four-day meeting with diaspora participants in Accra, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo argued that reparations for the slave trade should be given to Africa.

The drain the slave trade had on the continent’s population and growth, he claimed, was still being felt today.

He insisted that it was past time to demand compensation for the slave trade.

Accra served as the host city for the summit, which had as its topic “Advancing justice: Reparations and racial healing.”
