The government has given the National Cathedral Secretariat permission to use GH25 million as extra seed money for the building of the National Cathedral.

In a letter to the Controller and Accountant’s General, signed by the Minister of Finance, Ken Ofori-Atta, the money was told to be given to Ribade Limited as part payment for claims that were still owed.

“You are authorized to release the sum of GH25,000,000.00 to the National Cathedral Secretariat as additional seed money for the building of the National Cathedral as part payment of outstanding claims from RIBADE Limited,” the letter said.

On records, somewhere in the month of March 2017, the incumbent gov’t proposed the National Cathedral project as a way to show how the country is united, at peace, and spiritual.

The $350 million multi-religious cathedral will have an auditorium with room for 5,000 people, chapels, and a baptistery.

The goal is to finish it by March 2024. People have said that it was a bad idea for President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to build the National Cathedral when the country was facing so many problems.

In defense of himself, the President has said that the building is part of a promise he made to God before the 2016 election.

Jonathan Holm, a businessman, went to the Supreme Court to argue against the government’s decision to give the land and other help to the cathedral’s builders.

In February 2020, however, the court denied his request for an injunction to stop work on the land where the National Cathedral was going to be built.
