Gamal Gorkeh Nkrumah, a Ghanaian journalist and the eldest son of Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, has died. He was 68.
Family sources have confirmed that he passed away on Wednesday, October 14, 2026. He is scheduled to be buried in Egypt on Saturday, October 17, in accordance with Islamic traditions. The cause of death has not been disclosed.
Born in Accra in 1958 to Kwame Nkrumah and his Egyptian wife, Fathia Nkrumah, Gamal was a product of the historic ties between Ghana and Egypt. He studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) in London, where he earned a doctorate in political science.
He built a distinguished career as a journalist and editor at Al-Ahram Weekly, the English-language publication of Egypt’s Al-Ahram press organisation. Over more than 15 years with the newspaper, he covered international affairs and wrote extensively on African and global politics, with a particular focus on Pan-Africanism and Africa’s place in world affairs. His work bridged Ghana’s political history with Egypt’s media landscape.
Gamal is survived by his sister, Samia Nkrumah, a Ghanaian politician who previously served as Member of Parliament for Jomoro and chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), and his younger brother, Sekou Nkrumah, a writer and political activist based in Ghana. He is also reported to have had two children.
Reports of his death first circulated through Asaase Radio and were subsequently confirmed by multiple Ghanaian news outlets, including MyJoyOnline, GhanaWeb and Pulse Ghana.
Further details on the circumstances of his death and additional funeral arrangements are expected in the coming days.
