Enhancing Commercial Driver Standards for Road Safety in Ghana

In a concerted effort to curb rising traffic accidents and instill defensive driving habits, the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL) has partnered with Accra Brewery PLC (ABL) to launch an intensive road safety in Ghana training program for their fleet and commercial drivers. The initiative underscores a growing corporate commitment to safeguarding lives on the country’s major highways.

With heavy-duty transport vehicles playing a critical role in the distribution of goods and media publications nationwide, the training seminar focused heavily on defensive driving techniques, adherence to traffic regulations, and the dangers of fatigue and substance use behind the wheel.

Key Focus Areas of the Training Initiative

The collaborative workshop brought together logistics managers, safety officers, and dozens of drivers from both organizations. Facilitators from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service led interactive sessions aimed at addressing the leading causes of road carnage.

  • Defensive Driving Techniques: Drivers were trained on how to anticipate road hazards, manage blind spots, and navigate poorly lit or damaged infrastructure safely.
  • Vehicle Maintenance Protocols: Regular pre-trip inspections, brake checks, and tire pressure monitoring were emphasized as non-negotiable daily routines.
  • Fatigue and Stress Management: Emphasizing the importance of mandatory rest breaks during long-haul journeys across regional corridors.

Corporate Responsibility and National Impact

Speaking at the closing ceremony, representatives from GCGL and ABL highlighted that corporate entities operating logistics fleets bear a moral and social obligation to lead by example. As commercial transport activities expand alongside infrastructure developments like the Tema-Mpakadan railway, ensuring high standards of driver competence remains vital for sustainable national growth.

Stakeholders have called on other private sector companies to emulate this proactive approach, noting that multi-sectoral partnerships are essential to achieving the national target of significantly reducing road traffic fatalities in the coming years.
