Enhancing Consumer Safety in Northern Ghana

In a major boost to consumer protection and market surveillance, the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) has equipped its Tamale office with a state-of-the-art cable testing machine. This strategic deployment is designed to clamp down on the circulation of inferior and dangerous electrical cables across the northern regions of the country, mitigating severe fire risks.

For years, regulatory bodies have battled an influx of counterfeit and sub-standard building materials smuggled into local markets. Defective electrical wiring remains one of the leading causes of residential and commercial fires in major Ghanaian urban centers. With the new testing facility now operational in Tamale, local manufacturers, importers, and retailers will face rigorous quality checks closer to home.

Combating the Threat of Substandard Wires

The newly installed equipment allows GSA inspectors to perform rapid, accurate assessments of copper purity, insulation thickness, and overall electrical resistance. Substandard cables often feature reduced copper content and poor-grade insulation, which can easily overheat under standard electrical loads.

Speaking on the operational readiness of the new facility, regional enforcement heads noted that the intervention would significantly reduce turnaround times for compliance testing. Previously, samples had to be transported hundreds of kilometers to Accra or Kumasi laboratories, delaying enforcement actions and allowing illicit products to remain on shelves.

Implications for the Local Construction Sector

Industry stakeholders in the Northern Region have welcomed the development, noting that it brings much-needed accountability to the local construction boom. Electrical contractors and hardware dealers can now verify their inventory against national standards with minimal logistical hurdles.

The Ghana Standards Authority has reiterated its commitment to prosecuting vendors found culpable of dealing in uncertified products, warning that public safety remains paramount as Ghana continues its infrastructural expansion.
