Church authorities confirmed his passing, prompting an outpouring of condolences from bishops, parish communities, and humanitarian organizations across the globe.

The Life and Calling of Mario Mestril Vega

Born on March 5, 1940, in Nuevitas within the province of Camagüey, Mario Mestril Vega felt an early vocation to the priesthood during a period of sweeping political upheaval across the island. He pursued theological and philosophical studies at San Carlos and San Ambrosio Seminary in Havana, demonstrating exceptional pastoral sensitivity and scholarship.

He was ordained to the priesthood on August 2, 1964, serving diverse parishes throughout central Cuba. In an era marked by strict state secularism and tensions between church authorities and the revolutionary government, Father Mestril Vega established a reputation as a bridge-builder, dedicated entirely to parish life, community welfare, and the spiritual nourishment of families.

Pioneering the Diocese of Ciego de Ávila

In November 1991, Pope John Paul II appointed him auxiliary bishop of Camagüey. Recognizing his executive acumen and deep pastoral resonance, the Holy See took a historic step on February 2, 1996, creating the newly formed Roman Catholic Diocese of Ciego de Ávila by carving territory out of Camagüey and Santa Clara.

Pope John Paul II chose Monsignor Mario Mestril Vega to serve as the diocese’s very first ordinary bishop. Facing severe infrastructural shortages and an impoverished pastoral landscape, Mestril Vega spearheaded the construction of chapels, revitalized pastoral councils, founded charitable soup kitchens through Caritas Cuba, and nurtured vocations among young Cuban seminarians.

Leadership During Historic Papal Visits

Throughout his 21-year episcopal tenure at Ciego de Ávila, Monsignor Mestril Vega was instrumental in facilitating historic visits by Roman pontiffs to Cuba, including Pope John Paul II in 1998, Pope Benedict XVI in 2012, and Pope Francis in 2015. His gentle diplomacy and unwavering dedication to religious freedom earned him respect from both local parishioners and civic figures.

Upon reaching the canonical age of retirement, Pope Francis accepted Bishop Mestril Vega’s resignation in July 2017, appointing Bishop Juan Gabriel Díaz Sánchez as his successor. Even in retirement as bishop emeritus, Mestril Vega remained actively involved in parish prayer groups, offering spiritual guidance and counsel until his final days.

Global Tributes to a Devoted Shepherd

News of his death has resonated deeply within Cuban communities across Havana, Miami, and Madrid. Faithful remember him not only as an ecclesiastical dignitary, but as a caring father figure who remained at the side of his flock through Cuba’s most challenging economic hardships.

A solemn funeral mass and memorial services are scheduled to take place at the Cathedral of Saint Eugene of de la Palma in Ciego de Ávila, allowing parishioners and church dignitaries to pay their final respects to one of Cuba’s most enduring ecclesiastical shepherds.
