Devastating Floods Hit Hohoe Municipality
Recent torrential downpours have left a trail of destruction in the Volta Region, with Hohoe floods displacing thousands of residents and causing widespread property damage. Local authorities and disaster management teams have mobilized to provide urgent relief to the affected communities.
According to preliminary assessment reports from ground teams, the disaster has impacted thousands of lives, forcing families out of their homes and disrupting local economic activities across the municipality.
Scale of the Disaster: 5,140 Residents Displaced
The extent of the devastation became apparent as emergency responders reached remote corners of the affected areas. A staggering 5,140 residents displaced by the rising waters are currently seeking temporary shelter in makeshift accommodations and community centers.
Infrastructure and Property Damage
Beyond the human cost, the physical infrastructure of the municipality has taken a severe hit. Reports indicate that 412 houses affected have either collapsed or suffered significant structural damage, rendering them unsafe for habitation. Key access routes, local businesses, and farmlands have also been submerged, compounding the economic distress of the populace.
Government and NADMO Emergency Response
In response to the crisis, the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), in collaboration with local municipal authorities, has stepped up relief operations. Relief items, including food supplies, clean drinking water, and bedding, are being distributed to the most vulnerable victims.
Regional stakeholders are also calling for long-term infrastructural interventions, including the dredging of clogged waterways and the construction of robust drainage systems, to prevent a recurrence of such catastrophic Hohoe floods during future rainy seasons.
