Hollywood superstar Bradley Cooper is taking command of one of cinema’s most recognizable action franchises. The nine-time Oscar nominee is officially attached to headline an ambitious revival of the Hasbro military universe, portraying fan-favorite field commander Duke in an upcoming Bradley Cooper G.I. Joe reboot penned and directed by comedic auteur and filmmaker Danny McBride.

Inside the Bradley Cooper G.I. Joe Reinvention

The G.I. Joe property has experienced several cinematic incarnations over the past two decades, including 2009’s The Rise of Cobra, 2013’s Retaliation, and the 2021 spin-off origin story Snake Eyes. However, industry insiders report that this latest adaptation marks a complete creative reset designed to appeal to both franchise purists and prestige filmgoers.

By recruiting Cooper to lead the ensemble as Sergeant First Class Conrad S. Hauser—better known to generations of action figure collectors and animated series enthusiasts simply as Duke—the production aims to deliver an emotionally complex veteran leading elite operatives against emergent paramilitary threats worldwide.

Danny McBride’s Vision: Gritty Tactical Action Meets Razor-Sharp Edge

Danny McBride may be globally celebrated for riotous, pitch-black television hits such as Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals, and HBO’s award-winning The Righteous Gemstones, but the multi-hyphenate creative has spent the last decade quietly cementing himself as a formidable genre-revival architect. McBride successfully co-penned the hit modern trilogy of Halloween slashers alongside director David Gordon Green, proving his rare talent for honoring beloved pop culture lore while injecting raw stakes.

Sources close to the development note that McBride’s treatment strips away excessive digital sci-fi tropes in favor of visceral practical stunt work, intense psychological team dynamics, and authentic tactical combat reminiscent of classic military thrillers from the 1980s and 1990s.

A New Era for Bradley Cooper’s Blockbuster Legacy

While Cooper has spent substantial portions of the last several years steering critically lauded awards contenders like A Star Is Born and Maestro—both of which earned him major directorial and acting honors—he is no stranger to adrenaline-fueled spectacle. Cooper previously proved his action bona fides in the 2010 ensemble remake of The A-Team as Templeton ‘Faceman’ Peck, shattered box office records as Chris Kyle in Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper, and provided the iconic voice of Rocket Raccoon across Marvel Studios’ Guardians of the Galaxy franchise.

Securing Cooper represents a major strategic coup for Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, who are aiming to build a grounded, interconnected military universe capable of captivating international audiences across global markets.

Production Timeline and What Fans Can Expect

Pre-production is expected to ramp up later this year as McBride finalizes the shooting script and sets out to assemble an A-list ensemble cast surrounding Cooper’s Duke, including new cinematic iterations of icons such as Scarlett, Roadblock, Cobra Commander, and Destro. Further casting notices and official production schedules are slated to be revealed in the coming months.
