The Bank of Ghana (BoG) has officially announced plans to roll out upgraded Ghana cedi banknotes starting this November. This major monetary update is designed to integrate world-class security features, improve durability, and effectively combat rising instances of currency counterfeiting across the country.
According to central bank officials, the redesigned notes will retain the familiar cultural motifs and core denominations currently in circulation but will incorporate state-of-the-art technological enhancements that make them significantly harder to forge. Financial institutions, market vendors, and the general public are expected to undergo sensitization campaigns ahead of the official rollout.
Enhancing Currency Security in Ghana’s Financial Sector
As digital transactions grow, physical cash remains a cornerstone of daily commerce for millions of Ghanaians. To protect the integrity of the national currency, the central bank is upgrading the substrate and visual security elements of the notes. Advanced security features will include enhanced color-shifting inks, more pronounced tactile marks for the visually impaired, and upgraded security threads visible under specific lighting.
