Loganville, Georgia (CNN) — A 19-year-old healthcare worker, Lucrecia Kormassa Koiyan, was arrested after a video emerged showing her twerking over the head of a disabled man at a healthcare facility in Georgia. The footage, which has since gone viral, has led to widespread condemnation and calls for stricter oversight in healthcare settings.

The video, which surfaced on January 23, 2025, led to an immediate response from the Loganville Police Department. Chief M.D. Lowry expressed his dismay, stating, “I was appalled and deeply disturbed that anyone would stoop so low as to create a video featuring a vulnerable, disabled person in such a manner.”

Koiyan, seen in the video wearing scrubs and a stethoscope, was charged with one count of exploitation of a disabled person, a felony. She was booked into Walton County Jail and released after posting a $7,500 bond. The investigation has extended to review another video where Koiyan allegedly repeats the behavior with a different disabled patient.

This shocking incident has ignited a fierce debate about professionalism within the healthcare sector. Critics argue that this case underscores a need for more rigorous background checks, ethical training, and stringent monitoring to prevent such egregious acts of disrespect and exploitation.

Healthcare professionals and advocates for the disabled community have been vocal on social media, condemning the act and advocating for policy changes:

  • Increased scrutiny during hiring to ensure those with direct patient care responsibilities understand and adhere to ethical standards.
  • Mandatory training on patient dignity and respect, with a focus on those with disabilities.
  • Enhanced surveillance in care facilities to protect vulnerable populations from abuse.

The video has not only brought to light the actions of one individual but has also raised broader systemic questions about how healthcare institutions manage and protect those in their care. This case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with working in healthcare – responsibilities that include safeguarding the dignity of all patients, particularly those who cannot advocate for themselves.
