NPP Secures Seven Seats in Disputed Re-Collation Exercise

In a significant development following an Accra High Court ruling, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been declared ‘victorious’ in seven out of nine contested parliamentary constituencies after a re-collation of election results was conducted at the Electoral Commission’s (EC) Greater Accra office. The re-collation was necessitated by discrepancies in the initial declarations for areas including Tema Central, Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Ahafo Ano South West, and Ahafo Ano North.

Among the key victories, Patrick Boakye-Yiadom in Obuasi East managed to retain his seat with a close call, receiving 18,558 votes compared to 18,539 votes for the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) Samuel Aboagye. In Nsawam-Adoagyiri, Frank Annoh-Dompreh of the NPP won with 29,640 votes, narrowly defeating Fummey Philibert of the NDC who obtained 29,433 votes. Charles Forson also secured a win in Tema Central for the NPP with 18,870 votes, just ahead of Ebi Bright from the NDC with 18,815 votes.

Additional wins for the NPP included Eric Nana Agyemang-Prempeh in Ahafo Ano North, Patrick Yaw Boamah in Okaikwei Central, Elvis Osei Mensah Dapaah in Ahafo Ano South West, and Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah in Techiman South, each triumphing over their NDC rivals by slim margins.

These outcomes have bolstered the NPP’s count in the forthcoming 9th Parliament of the 4th Republic of Ghana, bringing their total to at least 89 seats.

The re-collation process, however, has not been without controversy. While some have praised the resolution of the disputes, others have voiced criticism regarding the EC’s management of the process. This situation highlights ongoing debates over the transparency and equity in Ghana’s electoral system, even as the NPP’s parliamentary majority is strengthened by these results.
