Kobina Tahir Hammond, the Member of Parliament for Adansi Asokwa, has demanded a retraction and apology from broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, over what he describes as false and defamatory statements attributed to him.
In a letter dated December 16, 2024, addressed to Media General GH Ltd, Hammond’s lawyer, Kweku Y. Paintsil, referenced a viral video circulating on social media. The video purportedly shows an agitated K.T. Hammond outside his residence, with a commentary from Captain Smart accusing him of making tribalistic remarks.
The commentary alleges that Hammond expressed discontent over an “Ewe person” contesting him for a parliamentary seat in the Ashanti Region. Hammond contends that these claims are false and defamatory, causing him considerable distress and embarrassment.
Hammond is seeking substantial compensation for reputational damage and legal costs incurred. He has demanded a full and unequivocal public retraction and apology from Captain Smart, along with an undertaking not to repeat these allegations. If a satisfactory response is not received by December 18, 2024, Hammond’s lawyer has indicated that they will issue a writ.
This situation has certainly stirred up quite a bit of controversy. What are your thoughts on this matter?
