Speaker Bagbin Dismisses Martin Amidu’s Accusations and Demands Retraction and Apology

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has categorically denied allegations made by former Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu. Amidu had suggested that Speaker Bagbin secretly met with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in Dubai in 2021, prior to the rejection of the 2022 budget12.

In a press statement issued by Peter Bamfo, Head of the Speaker’s Communication Unit, Speaker Bagbin refuted the claims, calling them “malicious and false.” The statement emphasized that the alleged meeting between Bagbin and President Akufo-Addo was baseless and unfounded. Bagbin demanded a retraction and an apology from Amidu for spreading misinformation.

Amidu’s article had also raised questions about the Speaker’s impartiality, given his role in rejecting the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy of the Government. However, Bagbin maintained that he upholds the 1992 Constitution and respects the will of the people, regardless of personal views. He defended his recognition of President Akufo-Addo as the duly elected leader, despite political differences.

The Speaker’s office released a copy of the reaction, setting the record straight and challenging Amidu’s false claims. Bagbin’s commitment to constitutional principles remains unwavering, even amidst political controversies.

This latest development adds to the ongoing tension within Ghana’s political landscape, as Amidu’s accusations continue to reverberate across party lines. The Speaker’s firm denial underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in public office, even in the face of unfounded allegatiON.
