Alhaji Ayaana, a 65-year-old businessman and philanthropist from Tamale, was honored for his remarkable 250-kilometer trek from Kumasi to Accra to attend the inauguration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama. In recognition of his commitment, he was gifted a brand-new Renault car along with an undisclosed sum of money.
The presentation was made by Kofi Okyere Darko, known widely as KOD, a celebrated figure in Ghanaian media and entertainment. A video capturing the moment Alhaji Ayaana received the car keys and took his first drive in his new vehicle has been circulating on social media.
The gesture has elicited a range of responses from the public. Many have praised KOD and those involved for acknowledging Alhaji Ayaana’s dedication, viewing it as a fitting tribute to his physical and symbolic effort. Conversely, some have questioned the appropriateness of the gift, sparking discussions on social platforms about the implications and intentions behind such rewards.
This is not the first time Alhaji Ayaana has undertaken such symbolic walks. He previously honored the second-term inauguration of former President Jerry John Rawlings in 1997 by walking, and in 1999, he spearheaded a 16-kilometer walk in Tamale aimed at promoting peace, health, and national unity.
