The heroes of Ghana’s 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup victory, known as the Black Satellites, are set to reap the financial benefits of an investment made in their honor 15 years ago. The Ministry of Youth and Sports had initially invested GHS 210,000 for each of the 21 players, an amount which has now matured following its placement with SAS Finance Group.

The investment, which started with GHS 10,000 per player, has grown significantly over the years. SAS Finance Group has notified the Ghana Football Association (GFA) that the funds matured on January 4, 2025, and players are now encouraged to collect their cheques from the SAS office in Accra. Collection began on January 8, 2025, and requires each player to present a valid Ghana Card for identification.

For players unable to collect their cheques personally, provisions have been made for a third party to do so with a notarized Power of Attorney.

This initiative not only marks a financial milestone for the players but also includes an annual insurance coverage component, aimed at supporting their health and life needs post-football.

The 2009 Black Satellites team made history by securing Ghana’s first and to date, only, U-20 World Cup title, a feat celebrated across the nation. This gesture of recognizing and rewarding the players’ contributions through long-term investment signifies the country’s appreciation for their achievement on the world stage.

The GFA and the Ministry of Youth and Sports have expressed their commitment to ensuring all players benefit from this matured investment, highlighting the importance of supporting athletes beyond their playing careers.
