Tragic Road Accident on Accra–Kumasi Highway at Mankrong 2

One person has been confirmed dead, and 37 others sustained injuries in a collision between a 40-seater Zhong Tong bus (registration AS 7022-21) and a Man Diesel truck (registration GW 3969-U) on the Accra–Kumasi Highway at Mankrong, in Ghana’s Eastern Region.

The accident occurred on Sunday, January 11, 2026. According to reports from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), both vehicles were in motion at the time of the crash. The Suhum Municipal Fire Station team responded quickly, arriving at the scene about eight minutes after being alerted at 6:59 a.m. They extricated the deceased from the wreckage, assisted the injured (some of whom were already admitted to Suhum Government Hospital), and cleared the site to restore traffic flow.

The front of the bus suffered extensive damage, while the truck had only minor rear-end damage. The occupants of the truck reportedly escaped unharmed. Eyewitnesses indicated that the bus was traveling at high speed when the collision happened.

This incident highlights the ongoing road safety challenges on Ghana’s major highways, including the busy Accra–Kumasi route, where speeding, overtaking errors, and other factors frequently contribute to crashes.

My condolences to the family of the deceased and wishes for a speedy recovery to all those injured. Authorities are likely investigating the exact cause. Drive safely, everyone — road accidents like this are all too common in the region. If you’re traveling that route, stay vigilant.
