Three Arrested in Volta Region for Impersonating Speaker of Parliament and IGP in Social Media Fraud Scheme 2

The Ghana Police Service has arrested three individuals in the Volta Region accused of impersonating high-profile figures, including Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to defraud the public via social media platforms.

The suspects—Gideon Awudi, 25; Edem Soku, 33; and Judith Soku, 31—were apprehended in the Dabala and Sogakope areas during an operation conducted by the Cyber Vetting and Enforcement Team.

According to police authorities, the trio created fake social media accounts mimicking the Speaker, the IGP, and other prominent personalities. They allegedly used these accounts to perpetrate various scams, including mobile money fraud, credit card fraud, airtime scams, and fraudulent online sales.

The arrests followed a prolonged intelligence-led operation covering the Sogakope, Dzodze, and Penyi areas in the Volta Region.

The suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with ongoing investigations. Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant against online impersonation and to verify the authenticity of accounts claiming to represent public officials before engaging in any transactions.

This incident highlights the growing threat of cybercrime in Ghana, with law enforcement intensifying efforts to combat digital fraud amid rising reports of such activities.
