Bekwai, Ashanti Region –
A 28-year-old bicycle repairer, Benjamin Kwabena, popularly known as Wofa Atta, has been sentenced to 18 years imprisonment with hard labour by the Bekwai Circuit Court for defiling three young siblings.
The victims include an 11-year-old boy, a 4-year-old boy, and their 4-year-old twin sister. Wofa Atta, a resident of Ahenema Kokoben Island City near Trede in the Atwima Kwanwoma District, pleaded guilty to two counts of defilement.
Court documents revealed that the convict exploited his close relationship with the victims’ mother, a charcoal seller, to gain access to the children. He sexually abused the 11-year-old boy on three separate occasions, the 4-year-old boy twice, and the 4-year-old girl once.
The case came to light after the victims confided in their mother, leading to a police report and the subsequent arrest of Wofa Atta.
Presiding over the case, the judge handed down the sentence on the convict’s own plea, emphasizing the gravity of the offences against vulnerable minors.
Defilement cases continue to raise concerns in Ghana, with child rights advocates calling for stronger protections and community awareness to prevent such abuses. The sentence is expected to serve as a deterrent amid rising reports of sexual offences against children in the region.
